Persecuted Church

Our first Sunday in Kampala, Uganda we worshipped with Watoto Church. To say this was a different experience would be an understatement. The persecution of Christians has increased as a result of the growing influence of Islamic extremism. Churches have added private security guards and metal detectors to catch anyone with weapons or explosives. As people drive in, vehicles are stopped and searched. A few times, individuals were asked to step out of their vehicles so it could be thoroughly inspected. It was interesting, even for this brief moment, to experience the world other Christians live in. Persecution is a complex reality for believers in Uganda. I’ve heard stories of how churches are blown up by suicide bombers on Sunday morning. Or how people hug their loved ones tightly and say meaningfully good byes because there is no guarantee they’ll go to church and come back safely. We went to church, wholeheartedly worshipped with no fear, and returned to our hotel. For this, I thank God for His protection over us. I don’t take it lightly that we did not encounter any physical attacks.
